    No takers?

The video got me curious enough to check out Haggis's non-Bond efforts. I remember watching Crash when I was like 16 after hearing all the buzz surrounding it. I got so offended after half an hour that I turned the thing off and started spitting feathers.

Well, after watching it last night I can safely say that I loved it. I didn't really want to, but I did. It is a rather cynical movie, but is also equally optimistic. It addresses the social disconnect that occurs in a large multicultural society where intolerance is in fact nothing more than ignorance. The whole notion surrounding the collisions that people manufacture essentially to bridge this disconnect was fascinating. The film's real skill relies on its well structured script which allows us to build initial impressions only for Haggis to subvert them or in some cases have his characters live up to them. The issues of race are obvious, but the film has a deeper more spiritual level and deals with themes such as redemption as Haggis has his character's lift the lid on the great unsaid. I didn't particularly agree with the movie all the time, but just because you don't agree totally with a film doesn't stop it from being great.

I love the way Haggis talks about Bond in CR. I'm convinced that character-wise, he is completely responsibility for why that film is so good.

I think he went off the boil with the sequel, clearly the success went to his head. Also it dosen't help that Forster had zero idea. But they should seriously consider getting Haggis and Martin Campbell back for Bond 25.

Campbell would be 75 by the time they shoot the next film.

Clint Eastwood is still going, as is George Miller. Both have directed action recently.

They need a good writer (and Haggis has demonstrated he has the chops) and a good action director who knows how to frame the shots and give us exciting sequences. Campbell would be great if he wants it and can still do it (especially if it's to introduce a new Bond actor again, which he has done superbly twice before). Perhaps the Pierce Brosnan/Jackie Chan film he's directing will give us some early indication of whether he can still pull it off.

As if 75 is an age for directors to retire...

Campbell would be the dream scenario. Haggis as well.

I hope the series will stay away from Haggis. He's an overrated middlebrow screenwriter whose contributions to CR essentially consisted of writing new dialogue and throwing in that ridiculous sinking-house climax. His dialogue is self-conscious and ham-handed--it spells out every piece of drama--and he's also the genius who wanted QoS to be about Bond finding the son he had with Vesper.
