Rotten Tomatoes' James Bond Movie List - Interesting Outcome

edited November 2012 in Bond Movies Posts: 36
Rotten Tomatoes have compiled a list of the worst to best Bond movies using their "Tomatometer" ( no, I don't know either). However, here's the list, which I'm sure will make for interesting reading.......

  • Interesting list and can't argue too much with where PB's movies stand. Though my top three would be OHMSS, FRWL, TB in no particular order.

Its hard to rank some of Moores movies, even when you recognise some elements are extremely poor. I still enjoy AVTAK, OP and MR as i find them great fun.

Moonraker better than AVTAK????? That's just sad.

Calm down, it's only opinions which are personal.

Moonraker makes In Like Flint seem serious.

Surprised to see Octopussy so low, and DAD so high. Dr. No! That's a bit of a surprise. But honestly, I kind of like DN in it's top ranking.

  • Interesting indeed. It seems that the top 5 are always interchangable.

If Dalton's two are not in the top five, I find any 'best of' list purely based on cinematic knowledge only, and therefore, disconnected from the source material AND THEREFORE a waste of time.
But that's just me, and I recognize that.

You want to see an interesting Bond ranking outcome? Look no further than Pete Travers' rankings (he's a film critic for Rolling Stone):

    http://www.rollingstone.com/movies/lists/james-bonds-best-and-worst-peter-travers-ranks-all-24-movies-20121109

While he does have a respectable top 6, he has YOLT at number 7 and DAD at number 10 (!!!!) which puts it higher than TLD, LTK, and GE. Also he puts NSNA at 13...???

Not to mention TLD and LTK are 21 and 22 respectively only being better than Quantum of Solace which sits at dead last (though I'm sure some of you would agree with that).

Based off of what you stated - mainly because I despise these gallery-esque countdowns that require me to visit a page like this so many times just for view counts - it sounds like a ridiculous joke of a list.

That Peter Travers' list is one of the worst rankings I've ever seen (except for the top 5).
And by the way, I hate when they compare that movie of McClory as a real Bond film... I'm a EON purist!

I like that Dr. No is #1, but I DON'T like that TND is #20... all in all, not a terrible list, though Dalton's two deserve way better than merely 10 & 11, but this IS the public, not hardcore fans.

Travers sure doesn't like Dalton or Brosnan (with the bizarre exception of DAD) and I think that could be why he underrates both LTK and TLD. I tend to agree with Travers's top five, if not necessarily in that exact order, and as for QoS, my only point of agreement is that it's the very worst... Craig entry.

That Traversty is bad from both a general cinematic approach AND hardcore Bond fans considerations. But, many are paid to be provocative without necessarily being enlightening.

I find the Rotten Tomatoes ratings much closer to my own opinions than Travers's ranking; ironically, I've often agreed with Travers reviews more generally. As far as the Rotten Tomatoes ratings are concerned, I actually prefer AVTAK over OP, having watched both within the past few weeks for the first time in years. I was surprised how much better AVTAK was for me than I'd remembered. Doesn't make it a good film, really, but sometimes going in with low expectations helps. As I've said before, no Bond film is completely unwatchable for a true fan.

Even MR? That's one I can only watch bits of on Youtube... if I had the program, I'd edit a watchable copy for myself...

It is interesting the varying opinions on what is a good Bond film and what isn't. Personally I a still have a soft spot for MR after all these years. Granted, there are some truly awful, and I do mean awful, moments in the film but for me it is not the worst in the franchise by any means. It's nowhere near the top of the list either but it is at least well directed by Gilbert, the cinematography is gorgeous and above all else does not take itself seriously and is at least still fun to watch, something of which DAD is the complete opposite. It's an absolute train crash of a movie. Tamahori should never be allowed behind a camera ever again for churning out that garbage.

Funny, I can watch DAD now (there was a time when I absolutely could not) and have fun with it; at least there's no moment where Brosnan says. "Emma, we can't disengage - the release system is jammed. Can you help us?" during the climax...

Yes that is one of those horrible moments that I mentioned. In fact any scene with Jaws in MR is pretty terrible. I'll try to only watch DAD every couple of years because I feel have to justify my fandom to myself and that means watching all the films, including the ones I detest. Thankfully, I last watched DAD six months ago so I have another eighteen months of happiness ;-)

    Hahahah, that's pretty funny!

I'll get around to watching MR again someday soon...

I'm biased because I first watched MR when I was six years old, at around the same time as TSWLM. If I had never seen MR until I was, say, eighteen I would most likely hate it with a passion

Will never comprehend how Goldfinger always sneaks into the top five of these favorites listings. And what's more, they've got Live and Let Die at #15. That almost constitutes blasphemy

Having The Man with the Golden Gun and Octopussy at #22 and #23 respectively, is not above nonsense. Other than those minor disputes, it seems a fairly accurate list, but would never include Casino Royle at #2. It's good - but not that good (a James Bond release)
