    It's said he died after a "brief illness", how sad.

    Just sixty-eight? That's relatively young nowadays. Sad news, indeed - a great composer and a fine contributor to the world of Bond, in my eyes, at least. RIP.

    By the way, I've tidied up the thread title slightly...

    Yecccccch. Hated disco Bond music. Great scene though, and one of the best PTS' in the series.

    Hamlisch had some good musical moments in the film, but I never cared for the overall direction. I'm not a fan of his overall body of work compared to other film composers. But it was nice to see that his TSWLM work was remembered in the article.

    I'm one of the few (?) who really likes his funky TSWLM soundtrack. Bond '77 is fantastic.

    It's strange how, at the time, I really liked Hamlisch's score for TSWLM. It seemed very hip and far more ultra-modern than Conti's belated "disco" score did for FYEO. I guess time hasn't been so kind to Hamlisch's Bond score though I still think there's some beautiful themes in there. It's a shame he wasn't available for FYEO when Barry wasn't available as I'd lke to have heard more from this classy composer.

    I would call the LALD soundtrack "funky". Big difference there. Hamlisch does "disco" and admittedly tried to cash in on that craze as did the movie on "Jaws". The FYEO intro by Conti sounds almost exactly like the TSWLM intro. But with "Rocky" elements that characterized his style.

    "A Chorus Line" is one of my favourite musicals. If only for that, he deserves his place in music history. His body of work was quite impressive, and he didn't just do "disco". A great composer in every respect. However, he wasn't right for Bond, IMHO.

    What a shock. 68 is indeed quite young.

    His score for THE SPY WHO LOVED ME is really good and Nobody Does It Better is one of the best title songs in the series.

    I also like the soundtrack, I don't know why it gets so much hate, I guess it's because it's so different (I think that is a good thing).

    TSWLM is probably my 3rd favourite Bond score behind TLD and LALD. RIP.

    Such sad news. Without a doubt the wonderful score for TSWLM, was one of the contributing factors in my overwhelming interest in Bond. Especially in those early days.
    Nobody Does It Better is not only a Bondian classic, but a movie great as well.
    RIP Marvin, and thank-you for your part in movie history.

    OK, after searching we've lost Bob Anderson, Bob Holness, John Lowry, Robin Ian Evelyn Milne Stuart de la Lanne-Mirrlees, George Leech, Harry Myers and Marvin Hamlisch. That's seven too many.

    No.... This came as a shock, even though i'm not a fan of his work in TSWLM he did make Nobody Does It Better and that was a very good contribution. I am sad though, and at such " young " age to...

    SO sad to hear this...... TSWLM was the first bond movie that I really got into, at the age of 6. The Lotus, Barbara Bach,jaws etc all made an impact on me and the overall soundtrack fitted that time (even the star wars music had "groovy" 70's versions in the charts)

    For sure "nobody does it better" is right up there not too far behind Goldfinger for me as an all time best Bone theme tune

    RIP Marvin....... I hope you and John Barry can write some fabulous music together now!

    "only" 68. He always seemed so proud of what he did for Bond in interviews, and he cóuld be proud of his camp-yet-cool score. A loss for the Bond-family, even more in this special year.

    Several years ago, after Casino Royale, the British Film Academy honored the Broccoli family with an award for their contributions to the British Arts. Roger Moore was the presenter. When Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson went on stage to accept the award, the song that was played, as they went up, was "Nobody Does It Better". I think that the Bond franchise will ALWAYS be accompanied by this song.

    This is a great loss to the music industry. Marvin's songs were part of 3 of my favorite movies...The Spy Who Loved Me, The Way We Were and The Sting. 68 is too young...and I'm 60.

    Barbra Streisand has released the following statement:

    "I'm devastated. He was my dear friend. He's been in my life ever since the first day I met him in 1963, when he was my rehearsal pianist for "Funny Girl." He played at my wedding in 1998... and recently for me at a benefit for women's heart disease. The world will remember Marvin for his brilliant musical accomplishments, from "A Chorus Line" to "The Way We Were," and so many others, but when I think of him now, it was his brilliantly quick mind, his generosity, and delicious sense of humor that made him a delight to be around. Just last night, I was trying to reach him, to tell him how much I loved him, and that I wanted to use an old song of his, that I had just heard for the first time. He was a true musical genius, but above all that, he was a beautiful human being. I will truly miss him."

    The opening ski theme always reminded me of "We Should be Dancing" by the Bee Gees - I suppose that was the idea.

    A shame another Bond veteran has passed on :(

    On the CBS Evening News tonight, Bob Schieffer introduced the segment on Marvin with the words: "Nobody did it better". The fact that he won an Oscar, Emmy, Tony, Grammy, Golden Globe and a Pulitzer....the man was amazing.
