It was on Netflix streaming for a while. Not sure if that's still the case. It was part of a television series. I'll check tonight and follow up here.

It's the region 1 DVD release only but it is there as an extra.

It's also on YouTube, if you wanted to view it there.

Thanks for all the help, i've found it on Amazon on the region 1 dvd CR67 release but unfrotunately i haven't got a multi region dvd player. so i think i will view it on youtube just so i can see it. I noticed that CR67 is coming out on bluray in the uk in august so maybe it will be an extra on that? hopefully. Thanks again.

In the UK, region 2, it's never been released.

And it's missing ending - watch after the film:

There are dark internet allies where one might find what one seeks.

    Oops, FBI. Gotta run.

I hold out hope, 2014, the 60th anniversary of the film, may net us a proper, intact, DVD release for the first time. Perfect time, too, if Bond 24 is also released that year.

Thanks Samuel001 for providing the link to the YouTube upload of CR54. I must confess I have always known about it but never had yet seen it. I have just watched act 1 and have to say am very pleasantly surprised by both the quality of the acting and production and I've very much enjoyed it so far.

  • I read somewhere they sold this version in the US at K-Mart for $1 some years ago. You should say there are plenty around then but if you look on E-Bay etc. you can only find them at $60 or more. I also hope the release this once....

It's criminal that this 1954 Casino Royale adaptation is not more widely available in my view.

But he's American? 007 should be British, period, in my book.

We've had 3 non-British Bonds, it hasn't affected my enjoyment either (Nelson, Lazenby & Brosnan). Only one actor has been partially correct to Fleming's interpretation of Bond - Connery - Bond is half Scottish, half Swiss.

I think the 1954 production - apart from swapping a few nationalities around - was well written and acted for the time, especially considering that it was broadcast live - not an easy accomplishment. It also introduced more people to Bond. I'd be interested to find out how it affected sales of the Books in America after it was broadcast.

I think it should be judged on its individual merits or lack thereof, rather than the nationalities of the chapters.

Even though he's from The Republic of Ireland, which is independent of Britain? I'm not saying that he's any less of a Bond, but if we're talking about Lazenby not being British, then we have to include Brosnan in that too.

Indeed, though he left the RoI in 1964 to come to England. I assume her classes himself as Irish rather than British though as he is Irish by birth.
  • Climax was a very ambitious show, adapting many well known novels into one-hour television dramas. In the fall of 1954, Casino Royale was probably the least known of the novels adapted. It was the third broadcast.

The first Climax broadcast was The Long Goodbye, based on the Raymond Chandler novel, with Dick Powell reprising the role of Philip Marlowe. Others in the series included Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (with Michael Rennie) and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

@AlexanderWaverly Was Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Americanised too, or was it set in Victorian England?

I have been searching for a copy of this for the past year. I am on a Chandler kick, and am an obsessive completist. I don't think any copy or tape is known to exist. Please let me know if any of you come across one.

The other Holy Grail for me is the episode of the engilsh television show OMNIBUS (from the '70s) entitled THE BRITISH HERO, where scenes from the novels GOLDFINGER and MOONRAKER are dramatized.

With the circular saw from the novel, rather than the films lazer...

Unfortunately, I don't know of where a copy exists. Copies of a number of Climax! episodes have been on YouTube, but I haven't seen it. I only found about The Long Goodbye on Climax! when researching the 1954 Casino Royale.

You're welcome. I just checked the ending. The script was by Gore Vidal and the under score by Jerry Goldsmith.

Legend says that in The Long Goodbye adaptation is when one character is shot and he stands up... on screen!

During a lot of years it was said that this happens with Le Chiffre, but it wasn't the case...
