James Bond won a LOVEFILM poll for the best (film) spy. Jason Bourne was 2nd. Also in the poll were Mission Impossible spy Ethan Hunt, Harry Palmer from the Ipcress File, Smiley from Tinkor Tailor, Austin Powers, Johnny English and Bryan Mills from Taken. Here's the full list.

    1. James Bond

    2. Jason Bourne

    3. George Smiley

    4. Austin Powers

    5. Bryan Mills

    6. Harry Palmer

    7. Johnny English

    8. Ethan Hunt

    9. Evelyn Salt

    10. J (from Men In Black)

    And the article. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/film/jamesbond/9359837/James-Bond-is-still-Britains-favourite-spy.htm

No idea why Salt was even included. I hated that film.
  • Austin Powers, Johnny English and Jay from Men in Black? Oh dear. I agree with the first three placements, but the rest is in the wrong order entirely!

No idea how Austin Powers beat out Bryan Mills or Ethan Hunt. I LOVE the Austin Powers series, but they're more of a relaxing comedy than a 'spy movie' to me.

Was there any doubt who would be number 1? ;) B-)

First best film franchise, now best spy. Got to love LOVEFILM.
  • @ TLR- I liked the Salt storyline and thought it was one of Jolie's better efforts,

No doubt the right spy won the poll. Anyone who didn't vote Bond #1 is a complete moron.

No 1. Nobody does it better. Fact!!!
  • What a BS list. Ethan is a top three contender.

Don't blame the list, blame the people that voted. My biggest compaint is this: WHERE IS JACK BAUER?? (he's TV, but they are making a film, and I'd rank him above all of them except Bourne and Bond).

I didn't like Salts storyline because of this, we're supposed to be wondering if she's a Russian or American agent, but why do we see her murder a bunch of vodka swigging Russians (that's another thing, stereotype russians as the baddies), but not one American?

Also, on the action side, I can't take Jolie seriously, she's too skinny. Haywire was much better, because the female spy actually looked like she could kick somebody's arse.

Anyway, here's an idea, why don't we all redo the list, how we would rank it?

    1- Bond (duh)
    2- Bourne
    3- Mills
    4- Palmer
    5- Hunt
    6- Powers
    7- English
9- J (I love MIB, but does he even count as a spy?)
10- Salt (Powers and English are parodys, but at least they gave me some decent entertainment)

Haven't seen Tinkor Tailor so I can't really add Smiley.
  • 1. Bond
    2. Bourne
    3. Smiley
    4. Palmer
    5. Ethan Hunt
    6. Bryan Mills
    7. Evelyn Salt

Don't count the other three because two are parodies and the other isn't a spy.

Indisputable. Spanning the 60's, 70's, 80's, late 90's to now, there has always been IMF agents (either good or bad; I'm looking at you, 80's)

Was the Ethan Hunt character not created for the film series? I don't recall him being present in any MI series from the 60's, 70's or 80's. Jim Phelps was the main guy.

    Or Bryan Mills? (Taken)
  • @JWESTBROOK, glad you fixed your mistake.
  • That makes sense. Around the time Mission Impossible released every fan of the MI TV series was up in arms when they saw that
    Spoiler:
Jim was the film's main villain.

Yea.. I've never wanted to see the 80's series, I saw the 60's repeats young, and I'm only really familiar with the modern series. Naive of me, I know.

Apologies. On a smartphone and on the move, didn't mean to sound condescending or ignorant.

Even if I absolutely loathed the Bond series, is there really any others out there that could contest this number one spot?
  • Are you expecting someone else ? ...No.
