    Noticed this in the metro today here are the top 5 most watched films on British TV:

    1. Live and Let Die 23.5 million (Jan 1980)
    2. Jaws 23.2 million (Oct 1981)
    3. The Spy Who Loved Me 22.9 million (Mar 1982)
    4. Diamonds are Forever 22.1 million (Mar 1981)
    5. Crocodile Dundee 21.7 million (Dec 1989)

    Just goes to show the pulling power of a Bond film!

    In the 80's. Today, we're lucky to get five million viewers.

    First time on TV for most of them although I remember Diamonds on Xmas day before.

    LALD was a big event - Bank holiday Sunday and weeks beforehand of advertising. Those were the days.

    Just look at the ratings for the six most recent films:

    GoldenEye - 10th March 1999 - 13.23 million
    Tomorrow Never Dies - 13th October 1999 - 11.86 million
    The World Is Not Enough - 14th November 2001 - 9.80 million
    Die Another Day - 27th October 2004 - 7.55 million
    Casino Royale - 19th September 2009 - 4.82 million
    Quantum Of Solace - 26th March 2011 - 4.63 million

    The entrants on the top list there come from an era when there was far less choice on British television (a total of just four - yes, four - channels). It's a far different world today. Neither satellite film channels nor the behemoth that is the DVD/ movie download industry was around then either, of course. Mass produced VHS videos only got into their groove in the mid-'80s too, let's forget.

    That broadcast was on Christmas Day evening on BBC1, if I remember correctly. An utter captive audience when it comes to British TV - Christmas Day viewing figures on the traditional two 'terrestrial' channels (BBC1 and ITV1) are always among the very highest in the UK. Even today with the plethora of channels we now 'enjoy'.

    Anyhoo, the list does indeed prove the (continuing) popularity of the Bond flicks in Blighty, no question...
