Why all the JT hate people? He may not be the best, but he's not as bad as Cec Linder and Norman Burton.

Right you are. There are so many good ones, I also feel bad for leaving some off.

Because I put Quarrel on my list, I realized you were missing Quarrel Jr, @St_George. Not that it really matters of course... ;)

    1. Good one. :))

    2. Saunders wasn't listed either. He probably would have made my list. Not sure who I'd bump though.

    Ahem. Cec Linder is Canadian.
From wiki. Cec Linder (sometimes credited as Cecil Linder) (March 10, 1921 - April 10, 1992) was a Polish-born Canadian film and television actor. In the 1950s and 1960s he worked extensively in the United Kingdom, often playing American characters in various films and television programmes.
In film, he is probably best remembered for his role as James Bond's CIA counterpart Felix Leiter in Goldfinger (1964). Another well-known film in which he appeared was Lolita (1962), as Doctor Keegee.
He was born in Galicia, Poland His family moved to Canada when Linder was very young, and he became a naturalised Canadian citizen.

GF btw featured 3 prominent Canadian actors. Linder, Lois Maxwell, and Austin Willis as GF's Miami card-pigeon. When you include Saltzman as Producer, plus references to Canada, such as GF's jet being announced as flying off the coast of Newfoundland, along with GF's mention that one of his Kentucky supply shipments, was brought-in across the Canadian border, GF is practically the honorary Canadian Bond film.

^ Wow, I regard Cesc Linder and Norman Burton as the worst Leiter's of the series. After the brilliant Jack Lord in DN, Linder seemed too old next to Bond. I'd struggle to imagine them being such close friends.

Fleming wrote that Leiter was tall, thin, athletic and in his mid-30's. Likewise, I found Burton in DAF extremely badly cast. For me, his often exasperated traits and 'comedy effect', maybe ok for another character, seemed wrong for Felix Leiter.
  • 1st place (Gold) image Tetsuro Tamba (Tiger Tanaka, YOLT)= 10 points
2nd place (Silver) image Jack Lord (Felix Leiter, DN)= 8 points
3rd place (Bronze) image Gabriele Ferzetti (Marc-Ange Draco, OHMSS)= 7 points
4th place image Pedro Armendariz (Kerim Bey, FRWL)= 5 points
5th place image Jimmy Dean (Willard Whyte, DAF)= 4 points
6th place image Patrick Macnee (Sir Godfrey Tibbet, AVTAK)= 3 points
7th place image Topol (Milos Columbo, FYEO)= 2 points
8th place image Shane Rimmer (Commander Carter, TSWLM)= 1 point

That was difficult. I had to narrow myself to one Leiter. Honorable mention to J.W. Pepper and Rene Mathis.
  • Wow, now this is a tough contest. It was not easy at all for me to pick a top 8. I gave
some honorable mentions to other deserving competitors even if they don't count-

    1. Pedro Armendariz (Kerim Bey, FRWL)- The all time best
    2. Topol (Milos Columbo, FYEO)- Not far behind Bey, great chemistry, inspired suggestion by Dana Broccoli and choice.
    3. Jack Lord (Felix Leiter, DN)- My favorite Leiter to this day
    4. Gabriele Ferzetti (Marc-Ange Draco, OHMSS)- A bad guy, but a fun one.
    5. John Rhys-Davies (General Pushkin, TLD)- Good sense of humor
    6. Jeffrey Wright (Felix Leiter, CR and QOS)- Didn't like the idea of a black Leiter any more than a blond Bond, but like Craig he's been great thus far.
    7. Clifton James (Sheriff J W Pepper, LALD and TMWTGG)- Comedic gold! I know it's
antithetical to what I usually like, but the character cracks me up to this day and I could
    not leave him off.
    8. Robbie Coltrane (Valentin Zukovsky, GE and TWINE)- Funniest character since Pepper, yet much more competent.

    HM-

    John Kitzmiller (Quarrel, DN)
    Tetsuro Tamba (Tiger Tanaka, YOLT)
Patrick Macnee (Sir Godfrey Tibbet, AVTAK)
Giancarlo Giannini (René Mathis, CR and QOS)

I like Lord too, but Eon made the decision to move away from the Fleming Leiter, to ensure there was no doubt as to who the alpha of the friendship was. Linder was great as the new-type Leiter in GF. Burton continued in the same mold. I salute their service. They were smart foils for Sean's uber alpha-Bond.

Both Burton and Linder hardly make a cameo. It is 'hi Felix', 'bye Felix' for both his appearances in GF and DAF. A real shame.

Yes, I'll hold my hands up, there were one or two omissions this week (some deliberate, some not), but methinks none of 'em were that serious and, dare I say it, dealing with more than 24 competitors for a single event would've been maybe more than even I'm capable of as a tournament runner, folks. ;)

Anyhoo, of that score (plus four) of competitors, it's pretty darn obvious who's come out on top - probably was before we even started voting, but still - yes, it's everyone's amigo, it's Pedro The Armendariz, peeps; Istanbul's über-ally takes a thoroughly well deserved gold. And filling out the other medal positions are Bond's dad-in-law Gabrielle Ferzetti's marvellous Marc-Ange Draco and the Israeli-Greek explosion of awesomeness that is Topol's Milos Columbo.

Elsewhere, the French-or-is-it-Italian-I'm-all_confuddled? Giancarlo Giannini's Mathis is fourth, the Land of the Rising Sun's favourite son (in the land of Bond, that is) Tetsuro Tamba's Tiger rises to fifth, and the two Felixes respectively (Hedison and Lord), ahem, 'leit' the way in sixth and seventh for Robbie Coltrane's celtic-cum-Ruskkie curmudgeon Valentin Zukovsky in eighth place.

Break out the tortillas, chaps, because the congrats this week go to Mexico - yup, the late, great Armendariz's gold medal-win sees the Central Americans jump straight into the fray with an enviable ten points and straight into joint eleventh place. And joining them as welcome - and impressive - debutants here (yes, really, your eyes doth not deceive you) are Israel. Topol's bronze sees the Macabees make good, nay terrific, their only performance in the tournament with a return of a big, fat seven points, landing them in joint thirteenth on the board. Mazel tov, indeed!

Elsewhere, the States keep things ticking over in second place with five more points for the kitty, but the biggest winners of the week are, in fact... Italy. Yup, the pasta-swillers' thirteen - that's right, thirteen - points accrued from this contest sees 'em leapfrog France back into third place, racing towards the fifty points-barrier as they do so. One wonders what the old Frogs'll have in their legs in way of a fight-back in that wee tussle...

And Event 15 coming up soon, chaps...!
  • YES! Kerim showing everyone up, naturally of course. Sad to see Quarrel and Dan Bond's Felix pushed out of the top 8, a damn shame, but at least we got Mathis in there!
