Rank the Lewis Gilbert films
  • We already have this for John Glen and Guy Hamilton. Why not?

    001) MR
    002) YOLT
    003) TSWLM

John Barry's music gives MR and YOLT(my 2 favorite Bond films as a child) a slight edge over TSWLM for me but all 3 are highly enjoyable sci-fi-themed 007 adventures and sit in my top 0012 series entries.

For me, TSWLM easily surpasses the other two, which nearly tie for 2nd place.

Again, on solely the director's perfomance:

YOLT -B E A U T I F U L, had some top class people under him and knew how to use them.
MR -Put Bond in space. And tried his best to do it. Made the movie fun, becuase he probably knew it wasn't going to, ready for it, fly ;)

TSWLM -Good, but not. A meh on my director scale.

Agreed. I'm very happy to see this underrated Bond film's stature rise.

Mods, can a poll be added to this please?

    Thanks,

    1. The Spy Who Loved Me- pure Roger Moore, great sets and locations, perfect action blend, a real thriller
    2. You Only Live Twice- a "classic" Bond movie which, while the source of many parodies, still retains a good plot and exotic locations. There are many thousands of plot holes and whatnot, but then again, it's Bond

    3. Moonraker- great first half, then falls apart in a miserable failed attempt to cash in on Star Wars

You Only Live Twice. Is there another Bond film anywhere so representitive of the series as a whole?
Is there another Bond film anywhere so lovingly parodied by everything from Austin Powers to the Simpsons?
Is there another Bond film anywhere with a scarred villain, a white cat, a volcano, Little Nellie, pirranhas, helicopters with giant magnets, beautiful Geisha girls, planes, trains automobiles and copious amounts of Ninjas?

    Seriously is there?

And did I mention John Barry's music?

    And rockets?

And poison dripping down dangly string?

I had to pick The Spy Who Loved Me. It's the better of his three films.

    1) MR

Purely because of my childhood love for this film and because of its great mood, for which Barry gets most credit from me.

    2) TSWLM

Great, epic action Bond. It's a great homage to the '70s and Moore is on fire.

    3) YOLT

Barry and Adam are the real heroes here. Connery, however, is visibly bored and I don't like the script all that much either.

Yes it is. Rather like the Inquisition in similarity to the torture, except we are subjected to sound and sight gags rather than whipping and drowning.

As opposed to John Glen, we're all pretty split on Gilbert's films, aren't we?
