but there must have been a better Bond than Broz to pick from.

    Ralph Fiennes?

Liam Neeson was also a contender at the time.

He would have been good IMO. Its funny that him and Brozza later ended up starring together in Seraphim Falls - not a bad film.

Neeson was said to be in the final two with Brosnan but didn't want to star in action roles or films, yet look at him now!
  • But Leeson was in Darkman (1990), star lead actually, so I don't know what he's talking about there. I will add I'm not sure that Leeson would of worked as Bond, not for me anyway, Brosnan was something of a success for the most part so in hindsight it looks like they made the right choice

You speak such wise, truthful words. We think alike, our great minds. /:)

Likewise, although I'm sure there's lots to point, counter-point on other threads. ;)

]I don't mean to be rude, but if all the Bond actors ever tried to do was to try and be like Connery, none of them would have had any uniqueness to them.

That's OK really. The fact that they are not Sean though gives them a uniqueness. That's enough. Otherwise best to find one's inner Sean.
The dedicated Bond actor, should ideally always be asking, "How would Sean have played this scene?"
Craig's recent declared fascination with the early Bond films is cause for much joy.

  • For GoldenEye, I had also heard Mel Gibson and Hugh Grant in the mix!! :O

*to be fair, Mel may not have been bad, except he was perhaps too well known.

For Casino Royale, I had heard the likes of Julian McMahon, Clive Owen and Ewan McGregor

I've said it before, but McGregor might have actually done a good job, if they wrote CR with him in mind. I can't see him doing some of the action sequences Craig did.

  • Gibson as James Bond ? , oh dear

What next, Danny Glover as M and Joe Pesci as Blofeld, I guess Rene Russo could work as Moneypenny

And Ewan McGregor ? , not really mad about that idea

  • Uh..... yeah if it was Lethal Weapon.... but that's not the only movie the dude has ever done. 8-|
It's a better choice than Hugh Grant at any rate
  • Connery
    Craig
    Moore
    Brosnan
    Dalton
    Lazenby
  • Quite a few fantasy timelines on here clip, or even completely eradicate, the Bond tenure of Roger Moore. I find that a shame. There is no evidence that George Lazenby could have carried the Bondian torch throughout the 1970s, with the same aplomb as Moore managed. (You could equally argue that there is no evidence that he could NOT, I suppose, but his subsequent career doesn't instil much confidence).

It's a ruthless business. You simply don't get to be James Bond in seven films, if you are merely a joke. Moore did much for the franchise, and, indeed, is STILL doing much for the franchise. It puzzles me to find so much dislike on here for the eras of Moore and Brosnan. Surely if a person 'hates' (a strong word, but I've seen it used in this context) their tenures, then they are 'hating' half the films of the series!

I'm one of those fans that actually enjoys ALL the Bond actors, and enjoys the different take, and the different qualities, that each has brought to the role.

If pressed though, I would concede that there are still two giants in the field. You have the Bond knights, Connery and Moore, who still, in my opinion, remain on a pedestal slightly above the rest.

I think there is plenty of love for Rog. I got him ranked #3 but I think both Sean and George were better Bonds, so in a fantasy world, I gotta wipe out Rog and defer to my two faves. No other way around it.
But in the all-time Bond lore, Sean and Rog are the definitive Bonds, with 7 films each. Essentially, the iconic original and his enduring successor.

I am assuming like me you dislike George as a human being as well?
  • The more I think about it the more I realize how much I like every Bond actor who isn't named George Lazenby.

Aw what's wrong with ol' George? ;)

  • It's funny though. I think Lazenby is the weakest Bond, but it may be partly because we only got to see him for one film. Even though I didn't think he was great I would still have much preferred him in good versions of YOLT and DAF.

No matter how strong or weak his performance in OHMSS is you can't change the fact that he's a pig. So many poor girls forced to deal with them, and many between the sheets. Then he brags and cajoles about it like he expects everyone to praise him. I'll praise you George, by sticking my foot somewhere you won't like it, and you won't be able to sneer your way out of the pain.

    1. Roger Moore - what can I say, I'm a light hearted guy!
    2. Sean Connery - defined the role, absolute class at his best
    3. Timothy Dalton - my Timbo love tends to go up and down, on his day no 2.
    4. Pierce Brosnan - nothing wrong with Brosnan, nothing great either, a decent job.
    5. Daniel Craig - not bad so far, I think SF could really cement him in the role.
    6. George Lazenby - only 1 appearance but an instantly forgettable screen prescence.

Never done one of these rankings before because quite simply, I find it impossible! :-?

Whilst I think Connery from DN-TB was THE best, his two following performances (YOLT and DAF) were a far lower standard than Lazenby's, Dalton's and many of Moore's. Whilst I grew up with PB being the cinema Bond, I'm not sentimental to that reason and I'd safely put PB at the bottom of my rankings. RM was a quality act, a true gent and whilst he deserves the utmost respect, I do however prefer the more gritty Fleming-like Bond films to many of his. The jury is still out on Craig, I think he is the right man for the part but I think SF will truly determine where he ranks with Bond fans, including me.

Oh, I totally agree. Pity he wasn't a nicer person.
