This may be the most cliché thing to say ever, but it's just the darn truth- I like them ALL. But I will do my best to rank them and give reasons.

1: Timothy Dalton- The ultimate crime against the series is Dalton NOT starring in GoldenEye (or AVTAK for that matter) if he did, it would have been the best Bond movie, EASY. There's just something about him- he feels like if Bond were real, he'd be Dalton (I'm beginning to feel the same way about Craig too). He looks like he could kill you unemotionally and professionally and then blend right back into the crowd-a secret agent HAS to be able to do that! I respect Dalton also because he was offered the role in OHMSS and turned it down because he was too young!!! Could you imagine being an up-and-coming actor and being offered the role to end all roles- and being mature enough to know it wouldn't be right (Yet)??? A lesser actor would have hopped right on it. Dalton is a great respectable actor, and I think he could return as M in the new films and still be credible!

2: Sean Connery- He's close to the top that's for sure- he's extremely cool, witty, tough, the whole package- he had some great one-liners that weren't stupid like some of them were. In fact the only negative thing I could say is this: if he was sick of the role, he should have just quit- not half-ass his way through the movies (YOLT & DAF). Had he only done Dr.No - Thunderball (when he still had enthusiasm) of course he would have been the best! Those 2 movies tarnish his otherwise perfect record.

3: Daniel Craig- the funny thing about Craig is, when I first saw pictures (the leaked ones before CR came out) I hated him! I thought 'no way is this gonna work' . He had the *really* short hair- and he was kind of.... rough looking... in the face. It was basically the complete opposite of what everyone pictured as Bond. BUT he sure worked!! I love both of his movies and I love him as Bond! With more movies under his belt I'm sure he will climb up to my number 1- he truly made Bond his own. ( I even recently got my haircut like him, lol) He has everything- he's ruggedly handsome, he's REAL, he's a great actor, he's funny, and serious when he has to- and he's a hell of a fighter. Daniel Craig is an AWESOME James Bond and I'm happy I gave him a chance because he just rocks

4: Roger Moore- Honestly it depends on my mood- if I want a realistic, tough Bond, then of course I'll watch Craig or Dalton, but if I simply want a good time watching a movie, not to take too seriously, then of course Moore delivers! I love how he walks into a hotel and every girl he passes wants to do him- I love the dialog he got away with, and those eyebrows, lol

5: George Lazenby- I really liked George- if only he did more films for me to base an opinion on, I'm sure he would have ranked much higher- sort of like how Roger didn't *really* get into his character we all know and love until (in my opinion) his third movie. One thing I really liked about George is his real life martial arts background- his fight scenes were the best because he truly knew what he was doing- he may not be the best actor of the bunch, but he could have easily beaten up any of the other Bond actors, lol

6: Pierce Brosnsan- being last on my list is NOT to say I don't like him at all. I like Pierce very much. I honestly think that with better movies he would have ranked much higher- GoldenEye was his only good one (and you know how I feel about Dalton in that movie...)

I know GE was written for Dalton but I'm not sure how I would have felt with him in the film. I'm sure it would have been a good solid entry but there are quite a few scenes I really like in GE that I can't see TD pulling off:

the casino scene
the car race
the scene with Bond and Monneypenny
the lighter scenes between him and Natalya

Don't get me wrong, I like Dalton and rank him as #3 but the main problem with him was that he couldn't flirt or be cheekey to save his life.

You know, I'll agree with you there- but there are just SO many more things that would have worked than not:
*teaming with OO6 at the beginning
*brooding on the beach
*meeting with M and having to listen to her putting him down, basically
*Bond and Q- loved them in TLD
*Bond dropping OO6 at the end (That part SCREAMS Dalton)
*Holding up Wade by his car when he 'wouldn't finish the password'
*
Actually I don't even need to continue... the whole movie, minus what you mentioned, would have been great!
Although I'm not sure about the car race and the lighter scenes with Natalya.... Dalton could be funny- and he was certainly confident. Have you noticed that Dalton actually does alot of comedies today? He's good!
As for flirting, I asked a female friend and she said this: "He doesn't HAVE to flirt!" ,lol

He does do a lot of good comedies now... I agree (loved him in Hot Fuzz), but I suspect that was more to do with him lightening up and mellowing a little bit with age.

Personally I thought Brosnan did pretty well in the darker scenes (the beach brooding for instance). I know a lot of people here would disagree but I never really had a problem watching him. He seemed conflicted but at the same time...kind of sad. I think that was the right note to play it. Troubled yet gentle.

Meh, what do I know? GE has always been one of my favourite Bond films.

My List, not to offend any fan:

1: Brosnan - Always the figure of Bond in my imagination
2: Craig - Great, Just great (he doesn't really look like a bond, but it's a reboot :$)
3: Connery - Still good nowadays
4: Moore - pretty good in some, but sometimes find him as a joke
5: Dalton - Bit lifeless, but he wanted to immitate Fleming's Bond
6: Lazenby - i just don't like him.

For Bond you need the balance of wit, sophistication, romance and danger.

1. Connery: The perfect balance of all four--a real class act in the role. It's those eyes that really epitomizes the performance. Flick of the lighter for a smoke "Bond, James Bond"-- no ones come close to delivering that line since.

2. Moore: Really embodied all of great Bond qualities but in a different approach; could be dangerous when he needed to be, and no doubt the king of romance and the gags. All around Moore was the best thing going for all of his films. OP and TSWLM would have seemed rather pedestrian without his presence.

3. Craig: He's lethal, but could use a bit more humor and range. He's a little more comfortable around the ladies than Dalts was. Very convincing as Bond for the most part.

4. Lazenby: Lazenby does really nail it in all areas: great physical actor, delivers the wit nicely, is quite the lover, and has a unique charm about him. Had he another go and improved his basic acting skills, he could have been the definitive Bond. He's just not the natural actor the above three are.

5. Dalton: While I respect his credentials and his intensity for the role, he could do well to lighten up a bit and be a little more comfortable in the romace department. He's not the most appealing Bond.

6. Brosnan: He possessed little inklings of all the Bond traits but never really nailed any of them. Therefore, I don't think he ever made the role his own, save for the maybe the first half of DAD

He did a noble job. He had the sophistication trait down pretty well as a Bond. But on the whole, I felt like he was a good actor "playing" Bond, rather than really becoming Bond the way Connery or Craig do in particular. But hey, if Brosnan is the Bond you grew up with and came to know and love as Bond, I can't argue with that. The first Bond films I ever saw were the Connery's so go figure...

Yeah, I suppose it all comes down to who we first see in the part. I'm guessing you feel the same way abt Brosnan I do about Laz. He did a noble job but just didn't have the opportunity to "own" the part in the way the others did.

@BAIN123 - It's because you're a Brosnan kid. He was your childhood Bond, and therefore will likely remain near the top of your list. Same for me and Dalton.

That's not the case with me. Though 13, is perhaps too little of one's childhood, to have a "childhood Bond" - my age when Brosnan made his last film. I often feel most of my childhood was spent waiting for the next one by which time I was nearly an adult.

I digress, Brosnan is nowhere near the top of my list, in fact he's at the bottom.

@Samuel001 - Glad to hear! But evidently, there's exceptions to every rule.

Just think about your childhood heroes. Bond, football, hockey, cartoons, whichever you liked... You'll tend to cherish those memories of a film, character, player, just like he's a god. So yeah, the rule of thumb would be that in general our childhood Bond tends to be one on top of our list.

For me, the non-current films (everything non Brosnan) were far me enjoyable though, largely because I was so put off by what was being churned out, it was so radically different from what had gone before in every possible sense. Die Another Day would've been the last straw, except by that time, I was able to follow online what was next and what looked to be a much better film - and it was!

Maybe, although I'm really not sure if GE would have been as successful had Dalton been in the part...and I like Dalton.

Let me explain. People say that GE COULD have been Dalton's TSWLM. However, the difference between Moore and Dalton was that Moore was ALREADY immensly popular with audiences prior to Bond. He'd been on tv and was a familiar face within people's homes. In short, the public liked him. He didn't have to try to win people over.

Like it or not, audiences weren't prepared to see a darker Bond after the lighter Moore (a phad that has now changed). GE, at the time it came out, was a MAJOR hit and brought Bond back into the spotlight in a BIG way (a fact which we forget now). I hate to say this but I'm not sure whether Dalton AT THE TIME had the gravitas to do the same.

I can't envision the audience of 1995 "applauding" him.

But this is one reason I think it may have been beneficial that Brosnan took over after Moore- THEN Dalton came in (in other words, GoldenEye could be his first movie)
Moore to Brosnan to Dalton would have been a much easier transition- then the public would have been ready for a darker Bond. It makes perfect sense when you think about it-- in the 80's most (not all) people weren't too fond of Dalton, and only now does he have a rapidly growing fan base.

Note: Funnily enough he didn't like GE or Brosnan in '95 yet came around by TND, but I think it was more the fact that he wasn't his beloved Connery. I do agree about the "verve for life" comment though. One good thing about Brosnan was that he made espionage look...fun. Dalton needed to lighten up a (little) bit.

I must be one of the few on here who thinks TLD isn't THAT good however. Don't get me wrong, its a decent entry with some excellent scenes and Dalton gives Bond some credability again after the somewhat geriatric AVTAK Moore. However I don't think I'd call it one of the best.
