The General Movie Titles Topic

I've been visiting this website a lot, and I even donated a small amount of money to it: http://www.artofthetitle.com .

I think it's a wonderful website. Off course it is a great site for Bond fans. You'll find in-depth background articles and compilation videos on the site, from Robert Brownjohn, Maurice Binder, MK12 to Daniel Kleinman. Hence why I love this video a lot. It's a magnificent tribute to 50 years of Bond main titles:

But the site is basically a big encyclopedia for many more non-Bond title designers. The site really gave me more knowledge about a man I previously did not know: Saul Bass. Also he made some wonderful movie titles:

Or what about main titles design Studio Prologue, who did the wonderful titles for "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" and now also for the "Mission: Impossible" films:

So my question for you. What are your favourite movie titles? Bond and non-Bond?

    I like Psycho and anything from Hitchcock, which were actually mostly done by Saul Bass. Also, The Italian Job (1969 version). Who could forget that beautiful Lamborghini Miura along with Matt Munro's "On Days Like These"? The main titles for Spy were pretty good too; I think we all know who they were going after there. Back to the Future is a great one too. Not to mention an awesome movie!

    As for Bond, it would probably be Casino Royale and Goldfinger.

    i've always loved the opening titles to Scorsese's movie "Casino".... Saul Bass = legend.



    i couldn't find an actual clip on youtube of the opening credits, so a video of shark theme will have to do in place of it.. but i love it's set up - so simple, just the POV of the shark swimming.



    The opening for T2 always evoked a very harrowing feeling - a playground (a place of fun and happiness) being decimated by a holocaust of fire.. chilling..



    Just love the fantastic artwork done by Alex Ross for this opening sequence.

    but if i had to pick one from a James Bond movie, it would be Skyfall..

    Jaws and Casino are great. With the shark swimming along, you just know someone is gonna get killed.

    Just to stick with Maurice Binder a bit. I think we should not forget that he did some marvellous other non-Bond main titles. Like these ones:

    "Fathom" (1967), with Raquel Welch. Once considered for the Bond-girl job in "Thunderball". And I think we all know why.....having seen these titles :-P. Funny tidbits, DoP Douglas Slocombe and screenplay writer Lorenzo Semple would later work on NSNA:


    "The Wild Geese" was off course a lovely big-buddy action flick, that brought together Sir Roger Moore and Richard Burton on the big screen. In many ways it also predates the later "Expendables" films:


    Maurice Binder himself was obviously the "James Bond" of title designers, even outside the beloved Bond franchise. These main titles feature the lovely Jane Fonda, with great 60's music, in "Barbarella". Funny how Maurice plays with the fonts :-P:


    Remember "Charade"? With Audrey Hepburn, Cary Grant, Walter Matthau and James Coburn? Well, watch it! It's a delightful comedy/thriller/mystery. Binder's titles here remind us of "Doctor No", and that's no surprise, as he made the titles for "Charade" one year later. Strong graphical visuals:


    Perhaps Binder's cutest titles ever. Just a bunch of lovely babies. Completely effective ;-). The titles were for the 1960 film "The Grass Is Greener":


    In 1967 Maurice Binder had quite a busy year, as he was also directing and producing the main titles for "Harry Palmer 3: Billion Dollar Brain". The other Saltzman-project that saw moderate success in the spy franchise:


    Also lovely, "The Mouse That Roared", 1960 British comedy classic. Very much like "The Black Adder" that appeared on TV years later. With Peter Sellers. Also pay attention to the very funny interpretation of the good old Columbia-logo (now attached to James Bond since 2006):


    The with Oscar's loaded film "The Last Emperor" should have received some credits for Maurice Binder's lovely work:


    This is perhaps the most Bond-esqye non-Bond title design. It was featured in the romantic adventure drama "Green Ice", with Ryan O'Neal:

    I absolutely love that Italian Job clip from above with the Matt Munro song playing. I did a drive that in Italy some year back and it was the greatest drive I've ever done, closely followed by one in Munich on the Romantic Road (Romantische Straße) on the way to the Neuschwanstein Castle. I've got to do it again one day...

    In terms of titles, I'm a big fan of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo with Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara. It's almost like a dark version of a Bond title, along with music by Atticus Ross and the brilliant Trent Reznor. Chilling...



    Also love Catch Me If You Can with John Williams jazzy score:


    And the Incredibles with the great Michael Giacchino score

    Catch Me If You Can is a lot like Saul Bass. You drove the Italian Job road? Lucky you! Did you drive a Miura?

    No, I didn't go on that road, but I went on a very similar road and it was an amazing experience. I went to visit my sister in Munich and we all took a road trip for a long weekend from Munich through Austria, then Switzerland, then Italy and finally France, where we stopped off in Nice and also visited Monaco. I was amazed at how many older red Ferraris I saw on the road while going through Italy.

    It was the best trip I ever had. I really felt like Bond when I visited The Casino de Monte-Carlo in Monaco.

    What upset me was I booked a really nice Mercedes (no Lambos at the rental agency sadly) for my trip through Hertz. When I went to the counter to pick it up they asked me if I was travelling to Italy. Stupidly I said yes (even though I was just passing by on the way to Nice). They said they couldn't give me a Benz for the trip because they'd experienced high theft rates of their cars in Italy. So I was given a POS Opel Astra. The drive was still awesome though.... When I got back to Germany I returned the Opel and got the Benz for my trip to the Neuschwanstein (also known as Disney) Castle (an incredible drive as well). Seeing that Italian Job clip brought it all back......thx.

    It was a black S-Class 250CDI Blutec.
