New Daniel Craig interview — Bond 23 will be a "classic Bond film"

edited July 2011 in Skyfall Posts: 503
Craig also discusses Q and Austin Powers’ influence on the decision to de-emphasize classic Bond film elements in <i>CR</i> and <i>QOS</i>.

If you can't or do not wish to view the YouTube clip, here's the relevant quote:

<b><font size="3">“I mean, I read the script the other day and... I'm more excited about [Bond 23] than I was about Casino [Royale], because we've kind of got a ‘classic’ Bond movie.”</font></b>

Bond 23 has the potential to be the best Bond movie ever. It has a great cast so far, a great crew, an incredible script (according to Craig), what else can we ask for?*

They now better deliver. I mean, I hope it's not just going to be talk. But that Bond 23 would really be a better (Bond) movie than Casino Royale.

    Here's hoping.

Finally something that is exciting ! A 'classic Bond film' is what I have been waiting for since 1989.

It should be good. Dan does seem very keen and hopefully we will get a film to remember. Currently I have mixed feelings about Dan as 007 BUT that could all change come B23.

Let's not go too quickly... Yes B23 could be a great Bond film, but being the 'best ever' is really, really premature. I have heard that time and time again everytime there is a new outing arriving... Sorry Panchito, but I am tired of people saying 'this could be the best Bond film ever'... I've heard that for DAD, CR and QOS...

Well, I've said it about CR but never about QOS...

Interesting interview which address a couple of much discussed points on this forum.

    1. Q - Craig says that it's difficult to use Q now because gadgets are everywhere in magazines and on the net. It's now hard for the Bond people to come up with ideas that the public isn't aware of.

    2. Bond's one-liners - Austin Powers has made it difficult for Bond films to wink at the camera, to have a bit of fun because they have been parodied so much.
Finally something that is exciting ! A 'classic Bond film' is what I have been waiting for since 1989.
Do you really think LTK was 'classic' Bond? Blimey, shows how we all view things differently. LTK was the first Bond to use excessive violence, and offer us a foul-mouthed Bond who acted without any thought for the safety of others. It seemed (to me) like the most un-Bond like of films.

I don't think Bond actually swore that much in LTK, he said "bloody" - just like Craig did in CR. However, having re-watched it recently there was certainly something rather un-British about LTK. The film could have quite easily had Bond working for the Miami PD and avenging a colleague.

I've also never really understood why people seem to believe that bond was destroyed by AP. Those films were parodying the classic Connery era (i.e. The period when Bond was at it's height). I don't think they were meant to be malicious in intent either - Mike Myers has even said that he loves Sean Connery.

I miss those classic little one-liners, no matter how raw or future parody-expected they may be. I don't really miss Q that much: I know that they were just films, it just always bugged me how no matter what Q seemed to supply Bond with, he ALWAYS had an extremely necessary use for it.

Not so it would be noticeable, and certainly nothing like you see in most mainstream action, but we got a 'watch the birdie you b******' and a 'p*** off'. Certainly mild but a million miles away from what we expect of Bond.

This being the one Craig is most excited about is great news to me. As much as the pre-Bond, Bond was fun, this being a more traditional film should make it the best anyway in my book as the harder edge, from say Dalton's films, can be brought back in. "Classic Bond" sounds OK, though I'd rather a classic and much remembered film.

Craig raises some important points of discussion and I feel has the correct view on them. With Q and the humour, the problems that arise are that they've been done and would become a joke if done again. To quote Craig, it has been "killed". With the gadgets, you or I could own them, so why have Bond using one? Let him use the normal GPS, that's "gadget" enough for me.

Sam Mendes having read all the novels is also a huge plus and something he should have done anyway. This can only help the finished film.

I'm greatly looking forward to this one. I hope we get more news soon.

Austin Powers really did alot of damage to Bond didnt he? The whole Blofeld thing cant be done now because people snigger and go "Dr Evil!". I wonder if we are going to get a "classic" innuenndo-laden-big-set-save-the word Bond" because Mike Myers really took the piss didnt he?

Or maybe enough time has elapsed for them to do that. Quantum has similarities with SPECTRE.

As for the gadgets? Its true we all have high technology in our pockets. Jet packs and camera phones arent exotic anymore? I think those expecting gadgets galore might be disapointed.

I am looking forward to this and already intend taking my niece and nephew to the Odeon Leicester Square in a family tradition.

But since for the last couple of years I have expected Bond breathed his last with MGM etc.....a new Bond film is a bonus.
  • what does he mean by "classic"

I didn't really understand what the interview man was talking about with regards to the one-liners being to "Austin Powers." If anything, the Bond movies created those elements which were parodied, so they have more right to use them than anyone else! It wouldn't be self-parody considering the fact that those elements are pure 007.

The thing is Bond parodies were nothing new before Austin Powers. We had Carry On Spying, Casino Royale and the Flint films to name a few. I genuinely don't believe that Austin Powers intended to damage Bond. Rather pay tribute to (and playfully make fun of) the classic Bond era. If Myers had that much contempt for Bond and really wanted to "do damage" would he have done this:

It sounds like genuine appreciation to me.

I think it's still possible to make a "serious-but-fun" Bond film and I'm sure Craig believes so too. Sam Mendes seems like a genuine fan (he references Bond in American Beauty for one thing) so hopefully he knows what he's doing.

Forget the UK Olympics, Bond 23 will be the big event of 2012 ;)

Mike Myers may have been a fan and might have thought it a homage but he did do damage. Babs Broccoli has referenced Austin Powers twice in interviews to my knowledge saying they could do a "Blofeld Type" adventure as Austin Powers has sent it up too far.

Somewhere in Babs' psyche is a wish not to be associated with that kind of adventure as people will go "tee hee Dr Evil!"

He may not knowingly have damaged the franchise but they are reluctant to go down that route nowadays.

And as for the others, yes - and Bond used to parody himself. But somehow the Austin Powers thing struck home.

Mendes' approach to the next film as a 'Bond movie with a capital B' sounds good to me.

Maybe we will indeed get something special if Dan's more excited about making this one than he was in anticipation of making CR - and the fact that excitement, in both cases, comes down to the script surely bodes well...

A for what I see 'Bond movie with a capital B' meaning, the film will have the gun barrel back, Moneypenny and maybe Bond in bed with the girl at the end. I think that's all the main boxes ticked.

With this not being an adaptation of a novel, yet Craig being more excited about doing this than any of the others Bond 23 could stand a chance of being one of the best original scripts we've had to date though it all depends on how well this is transferred to the screen. We have maybe the best crew (and possibility cast) working on a Bond film since the 60's so I've got great hope. I really just want EON to deliver - now more than ever.

Simple things like less action really need to count now, I've had enough from the last 15 years to last me twice as long...

I am hoping that with the 'classic Bond' nod, we do see things like that: Bond bedding women completely unrelated to the film, maybe at least a raw quip or two.

    We'll have to make one.

Agreed. Supposidly he will. He'll a more Conneryesque sense of humor and bag countless women.

  • One question - did he specifically say that the new film will be in the mold of "classic" Bond films or is it that the film will be so good that it will be a "classic"? Not to be playing with semantics but it is an important distinction...

As for the one liners I can take them or leave them. I thought "that last hand nearly killed me" in CR was good and delivered really well, as were many of the lines in TB ("Wait until you get to my teeth"). But a lot of the one-liners in the Brosnan years (and, from what I hear, the Moore years) were ones that caused you to groan instead of laugh. Those I can do without.

If nothing else I'm assuming this film will have more moments of fun and the character of Bond will now be more established as the Bond most people expect to see.

Good question. I would give the nod to 'classic' in the sense of creating something akin to the early films. Had he meant 'classic' in the sense of a great film, then he is dissing CR which I'm sure he regards as a great Bond film.
