Is Die Another Day suddenly loosing its gloss and appeal?

I am asking this, because this quality can also be valid for other Bond films. Did "Die Another Day" suddenly lost its gloss and appeal after it premiered in 2002? Or did it lost its gloss and appeal three months after its premiere? Or two years after it? What do you think? Has the gloss and appeal improved again slightly?

I think it lost gloss and appeal when it came out on DVD and then even further when released on Blu-Ray. It's quite impressive when you look at archives in here and other sites that show DAD in the top 5 of many fans rankings around 2002. After rewatching, all the flaws became much more apparent. Also, action movies continued to get more serious which helped further take away from the appeal of DAD.

That being said, there are still days that I love popping this one in!

I think this movie lost its gloss and appeal after the first viewing in the theatre quite frankly. It was and remains a cliche'd film with over the top, affected performances from Oscar winners, leading villains & so called music superstars in particular.

However, from my perspective, after almost a decade in the wilderness, it is enjoying somewhat of a renaissance.

As the last of the original timeline James Bond films before the reboot, it has a nostalgic element to it. Also since it is Brozz's last performance, and in my estimation his most assured and confident portrayal of James Bond.

Since I know what to expect from it, I can sit back and enjoy it for what it is. Mindless, dumb fun and bombastic entertainment. No need to think too much with this one. What you see is what you get. No underlying themes or meaningful elements to analyze.

It lost gloss & appeal with repeated viewings of the Moneypenny VR scene. It began to come back as people discovered the magic of the bathroom stop & the skip button.

I can have a great time with it up through the sword fight (if I skip over anything todo with Jinx at that point, as well as Madonna's cameo). If the film ended there it would be in my Top Ten, no lie. And I'd praise it for it's brevity.
But then you would be missing the lasers... and you know my next line here...

I wish that there was more of an audience for that length.
Fleming wrote short stories with Bond, why not a movie made of three or four short tales by different writers & directors? Or even different Bond actors?

Trends and norms change in unpredictable ways, so who knows, that may seem like an appealing and exciting option in ten years.
I have a Batman animated anthology DVD like that, and I enjoyed the heck out of it.

Wow what a tough question. I mean, when I first saw this movie I thought everything about it was fantastic. Then the film started.

Still, very difficult to know when the appeal of DAD started to wain. It could've been the video game gun-barrel or when Madonna opened her mouth. Then again, perhaps it was when Bond rebooted his own heart. No, no it was definitely when Bond walks into the hotel just wearing his jammy bottoms. Like I say, so difficult to pinpoint exactly when.

What I meant in my (admittedly) shoddily worded post was that I thought DAD was fantastic up until it actually started. In future I'll leave the jokes to those more capable. Although, you're right, my eight year old self would've loved every minute of it.

Haha! I love your sense of humour, @Gustav_Graves! :))
  • Although there are some great ideas that are disappointingly wasted in this film, I think that it is a complete trainwreck. If I had seen it around the time at which it was released, I would have hated it, as I do now.

I have a big problem with Madonna's theme song, the main title sequence and the idea of Bond being imprisoned for 14 months. The Bond we knew would have escaped more or less. Other than that, the film is fine with me. Certainly better than The World Is Not Enough by far.

For me it never really had any gloss or appeal in the first instance of seeing it in the cinema in 2002.

Casino Royale '67 ruined it for everyone! If it were taken seriously it might turn out to be an interesting experience. Seems a little gimmicky though.

DAD is a fun Bond, like MR- with a more serious plot.

I'd argue that Moonraker was more serious. In Moonraker, you have Drax wanting to end all human life with poison gas. In Die Another Day you have Crazy Korean guy using a solar laser to destroy a mine field so North Koreans can take over South Korea.

An invisible car is more believable than secret space launches & a secret orbiting base. IMO anyway. ;)
