It will never happen now, as at 48, he would be deemed to old to take on the role. And by the time Craig finally lets go of the role, Purefoy will be the other side of 50. However, if he had allready started his Bond era, he could still carry the role in 2012.

Like both Dalts and The Brozzer once were, Purefoy is the biggest loser of recent years when it comes to Bond. As you say, he's surely missed out now, but had he been cast instead of Brosnan in '94 or in the place of Craig in '06, he surely would've done a decent job (I was pulling for him after The Brozzer left, but, hey, I'm happy with Craig now ;) ).

Having said all of that, he did admit in an interview that he once had a Bond audition and messed it up, so who knows...? :p

I agree. When I first saw that photo a while back the first thought I had was Bond being briefed by M, who is behind the desk.

Fassbender's decent, I'll give him that - and he certainly looks good. But, must say, acting-wise, I wasn't bowled over by him in X-Men.

And, rightly or wrongly, I do find his letter box-like mouth annoyingly distracting... :p

Fassbender has never shouted Bond to me. Sure he's got a certain Bondian quality, with plenty of charm. But as Bond. I just don't see it.
When the time comes to replace Daniel Craig, I believe that EON should seek a slightly younger actor, who could/would commit to Bond for a long stint in the role.
Of those mentioned so far Henry Cavill is a likely bet.

Having been a close contender (?final 2?) when Craig was cast.
Matthew Goode and Alex O'loughlin would be two actors I believe could fill OO7's shoes.

Certainly think Fassbender is the man everyone is going to be talking about for the next few years. But I think by the time DC steps down he'll be either too big a star already or too old.

Would be interesting to have a part German Bond. He looks like he could be half Scottish and half Swiss.

He's Irish-German. Sadly, he is 34 and by the time Dan is done if he does another after Bond 24, he will be 38 at least. That still shouldn't matter, and I hope MGM don't go on age, because Dan is in his 40s now and he still looks great and is in great physical shape.

I knew he auditioned for Bond, but I had never heard him speak about the audition. Bit of a shame really, as he can be a bit of a charmer. Just look at this, he's talking about a sword, and she (the interviewer) is like putty in his hands:

And that's one example of when I disagree with Mark Kermode, I actually enjoyed Ironclad.

Okay, everyone give me their honest answer about this. A lot of people say they saw this photo and thought that Fassbender *must* be Bond at some point - but is it the actor or the setting? If you take ANY actor and subsitute him in this photo wearing the same suit and sitting at that desk he would look "very Bond" - assuming that a Goldfinger-type suit makes someone look like Bond! To me it's similar to saying "You know, I never agreed with an American as Bond but Jon Hamm would be great!" just because he stars in a series set in the 60s...

It's his look, he looks hardened like Connery's Bond. He has the acting chops to put on a strong performance, and can fill out the suit well. And you couldn't just put anyone in that suit and setting and call them Bond. It takes a special actor to be truly Bondian(laughs while thinking of Brosnan).

The best of this lot so far is Henry Cavill, who'll be the right age by the time Craig hangs up his gun. Also, Benny, that pic doesn't do him justice as he's matured a lot since that was taken. (See below).

I happen think Tom Hardy is far too short to play Bond and Fassbender slips into his Irish accent too easily (See X-Men Origins).

  • If Dalton and Brosnan (and possibly Moore) have taught us anything, there's definitely a pattern of actors getting *this* close to the role, only to finally get it years later.
    Cavill fits that scenario.
But he's Superman now so I guess we'll see. You could also argue he's a bit pretty-boy still-- but let's see how he looks in 10 years. Though to be fair, the pics I've seen on this thread are pretty boy. Some of the recent shots of Superman- he's pretty rugged and tough looking.

I'm no fortune teller- but if it ends up that Cavill takes over one day I certainly wouldn't be shocked

I agree. Wasn't Dalton a prime canidate for the job five times before he accepted it???? Then again Cubby seemed to admire him.

Just curious guys, did anyone recommend Daniel Craig for the role on here when Brosnan left the role?
  • For me it's Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba, Alex O'Loughlin, Matthew Goode, Richard Armitage, Tom Hardy or Eddie Redmayne (When he's a bit older).

    Future:
    Daniel Radcliffe

It's easy to dismiss Radcliffe right off the bat because he's Harry Potter, but if Craig taught me anything, it's 'don't judge a book by its cover'. I hated Craig before I gave him a chance, and on Casino Royale's opening day, he had won me over before the PTS was even over!
Me personally, I've never seen any of the Harry Potter movies, but from what I gather, he's a very good actor, both in film and on the stage. I want to see 'Woman in Black' when it comes out.
Plus, he's only, what-- 21? For the purposes of this forum, if we're looking for guys when Craig is done (or the next guy is done), then we should be including guys around Radcliffe's age
Daniel Craig has taught me to keep an open mind; 15 more years and Radcliffe may very well have Bond written on him!
Look at hiiiim...I mean...it's Bond, right there!

That's actually a very valid point! It doesn't necessarily change my opinion of Fassbender per se, but it definitely slaps some sense into me to not just blindly hop on the Bond Bandwagon whenever an actor shows up in a nice suit! lol

The funny thing about First Class is that before it came out, the director flat out said he was making it as if it were a Bond movie (sorry I don't have a link), so most of the audience may have been in that mind-set anyway!
And how true-- many particular scenes have a very 'Bond look' about them-- and they're all including Fassbender! The above scene in the office, the bar, and sneaking around in a wetsuit.

Not me- I had never heard of him prior. And maybe that's what we need for the next Bond as well! I do hope Craig does 5 or 6 movies though. If they're serious about him 'beating Moore's record' and doing 8 movies, then they better start making them faster. But then again, the quality would easily suffer. Nope, 5 or 6 would be great for me.

Wow! I feel like I wrote a damn book up there- just looking back at what I wrote, it's obvious I have no clue where they will go with the next Bond actor! lol
We can only speculate. For the next Bond, I still stand by Cavill or Fassbender-- unless they can find a new actor who suits the role

As for past Bonds, I had a great vision-- I was watching The 4th Protocol (1987) because I wanted to picture Brosnan in The Living Daylights/ Licence to Kill era. Plus it's a good movie too ;)
But unexpectedly, I found myself noticing Michael Caine! There might not be ONE person on this forum who agrees with me-- but I'm not kidding: Michael Caine would have made a GREAT Bond!
Not in 1987 mind you, because he was already in his 50's, but circa 1970? I would have LOVED to see him do one or two!
In 4th Protocol, Caine plays a very Bond like character (albeit more realistic)
There's lots of scenes in the movie that are very 'Bond', most notably the scene in the briefing office when he's arguing with the Director (played by Julian Glover!)

Here he is from the 70's-- looks like maybe from 'Get Carter'. Maybe a different hairdo and there you go

I was never on here years ago but I think he sort of came out of the blue. I only knew him from our friends in the north (british TV show), and that shitty tomb raider film. I'd never heard anyone reccomend him anyway. Still, I'm proud to say that I never judged him about how he looked when he was cast and waited until CR to judge him. I think that if bond has changed so much over the years, and has never really looked much like the book character, then why should hair (or skin while I'm ranting) colour matter???

On topic, idris elbra for the next bond!!!! I dont think henry cavill should do it. Fassbender would be ok, or hugh jackman. I also wouldn't mind a younger actor who isn't that well known.

Thanks for the feedback fellas, the reason I asked was because there isn't an actor currently who I can actually see as bond. I must admit when Craig was announced , I thought it would be the start of the end of my love affair with 007! but thankfully everyone associated with CR proved me wrong. What I'm getting at is I hope DC continues in the role for many more films .

    And p.s

I've thought about what a Caine Bond would be like. It would probably have been very entertaining, actually. I mean that in a good way.

If he could speak English a bit better... Jean Dujardin.

He was phenomenal in the Bond spoof series, OSS 117... With Berenice Bejo no less!
Any Bond fan should watch the first flick, he's identical to a young Connery.
