And it didn’t have to look far to find a willing volunteer – Guy Ritchie is now in the process of sealing a deal to take it on.

Ritchie, who has found success at the studio with Sherlock Holmes (and has sequel A Game Of Shadows due to hit our shores next week), has been busy setting up a production company with Holmes producer Lionel Wigram. U.N.C.L.E. could well turn out to be the first production for that new business, especially if Ritchie directs it.

If he does, he’ll be bringing to life the adventures of Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin, two agents whose task is to fight evil around the world. Currently, the film has a script by Contagion’s Scott Z Burns but little else in place. It’s been having trouble locking in a pair of leading man, with original Solo choice George Clooney passing due to worries over the stunts and Bradley Cooper dropping out due to scheduling issues. Channing Tatum was reportedly interested, but nothing much has been said since. For all we know, Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law could now play the pair, assuming they even have the time…

-Empire Magazine

Interesting. I enjoyed the first Sherlock film, and am sure to enjoy the second. Expect grainy contrast and slow motion for UNCLE!

I don't believe there is an Uncle thread. I did search but didn't find. If so, apologies in advance. Please delete this thread and relocate comment.
===Ok that's out of the way. Anyway I just bought the complete Uncle TV series - now one of my proudest possessions. Amazon cut the price in half for one day so I pounced. Each of the 4 seasons are neatly packed in an official Uncle briefcase, which is real handy to have, in case you need to go on a mission. Each season has its own extras disc and there are two bonus discs with the set, dedicated to even more extras. Its a very complete set. What's missing though are 7 of the 8 Uncle theatrical releases. (one of the films is included as an extra) The season one extras-disc does though include the original "Solo" colour pilot, which was later heavily edited and transfered to black and white, as The Vulcan Affair, for the series debut, fall 1964. The pilot was also the basis for one of the films, so there are basically three versions of the same story and footage; the original TV pilot, the season-one debut episode and the theatrical film.
For completists, Warner Brothers has just this year, released the 8 theatrical films in one dvd set, along with the complete Girl From Uncle series, which lasted only one season. WB however has released Girl From Uncle as a Part One and Part Two set.
The good news though is that all of Uncle is now available for purchase, if you want to spend the cash. Basically 4 separate purchases are required.
1. The Man From Uncle complete series (1964-1968); Seasons 1-4 including the colour "Solo" pilot. Season One is b&w. Seasons 2-4 are in glorious Metro colour.
2. Complete movie set. All 8 films.
3. The Girl From Uncle, Complete Series Part 1
4. The Girl From Uncle, Complete Series Part 2
Of note about the films. None are original from the TV series. All 8 are two-part TV-show episodes, with additional footage and fresh titles for theatrical release. So if you watch the whole TV series, you've basically seen the films. However the films do have that extra footage and the extra film is a little less PG, not having to pass mustard with the TV censors.
Season two I think is Uncle at its absolute best. I am early into season two, having plouged through all 29 Season One b&w episodes. The colour makes such a difference. The producers clearly have made an effort to splash as much colour on the Uncle palette as possible to fully exploit the new colour tv medium, circa 1965.
We learn from the extras, that Uncle really found its audience off the back of Goldfinger, which was released Dec. 1964. Bondmania fueled Uncle mania. Uncle was one of the biggest shows in TV-land by the time Season One wound down. Both stars were bombarded with fan mail, especiallyMcCallum, who enjoyed a pop-star like status. So season two debuted in glorious colour with no expense spared.
I might even recommend starting with Season Two for maximum initial Uncle impact and then, when finished with Seasons 3 and 4, go back and watch how it all started with Season 1. One can see how the series finds its legs and style as Season One moves along. The show was perfected IMO by the time Season One was done.
The Season One extras disc devotes some quality time discussing how Ian Fleming and Bond were the impetus for the series. Uncle is truly a child of Bond. When Robert Vaughn first read the Uncle pilot script, he remarked it was "Bond on TV."
Producer Norman Felton says that the success of DN on screen is what prompted him to approach Fleming to help create a Bond-like TV show. Felton describes his initial meetings with Fleming. The two met in New York City, but because of Fleming's recent heart problems, Fleming insisted they walk and talk, as he needed the heart exercise. Felton recalls that Fleming spent much of their time together recounting his own intelligence exploits and really didn't offer up much in the way of developing a new series. It was Felton and Sam Rolfe who ultimately created the series, but Fleming did offer up the name Solo. Meanwhile, as Felton explains, when Eon caught wind of the project, they dissuaded Fleming from continuing, preferring he concentrate on Bond. Eon was also concerned that use of the character Solo would conflict with the upcoming GF, which of course included a Solo character. The compromise that was reached was that the name Solo would not be included in the title of the series, hence the dropping of the Pilot title "Solo" in favour of the iconic title that followed. Good move.
Uncle is noted for its awesome rotation of guest stars. It was one of the hippest TV shows for an actor to be on. Each season has its own extras feature detailing that season's notable guest-stars.
Of note for Bond fans: the Season One guest list included both Luciana Paluzzi and Richard Kiel. Paluzzi, fittingly plays a Thrush femme fatale, which foreshadows her TB role, which was just around the corner. Kiel turns up twice. First time in the pilot, in an uncredited henchman's role. He swings a pipe at Solo and that's it but its definitely Kiel. Kiel turns up later in another episode; this time in a meatier henchmen's role, in which he also has a few lines and a full credit. Kiel was battling the agents from Uncle long before he battled James Bond.
Season One also features an episode in which Shatner and Nimoy first appeared on screen together. The same episode also includes the future Colonel Klink, Werner Klemperer. Other notables that turn up in the first season; Get Smart's Babara Feldon, Klink's Hogan's Heroes' sidekick, John Banner (Sargeant Schultz), Trek's James Doohan, Batman's Cesar Romero (the Joker) and Yvonne Craig (Batgirl), Sharon Tate, Robert Culp, Eddie Albert, Carol O'Connor, Ricardo Montalban and a host of others.
The Uncle-girls are of course are a feast for the eyes. Not only the weekly guest star but also the female agents that populate the HQ and the Thrush enemy-agent ranks. TV just does not get any better than Uncle. Actually the Avengers gets equal props. The two shows are 1 and 1A IMO.
Side note on the Avengers. Even though the Avengers, first hit the airways in 1961, a year before DN, the show is still very much a child of Bond. The TV producers, readily admit to being influenced by Fleming's books and sagely forecast the Bond driven spy-mania that would flourish in the 1960's. The Avengers was their response. The Avengers found its style in its second season, post DN, when Steed's gentleman spy took over as the main focus, from Ian Hendry's doctor-detective, David Keel. We also meet Honor Blackman's glamourous, Bond-girlish, Steed partner, Cathy Gale in the second season and the Avengers was off and running.
Full rundown on Uncle's second season, when I'm done with it. Although I may take my time. It is 30 episodes and like a premium vintage, it should be savoured. Season 2, I think is Uncle at peak.

Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffatt should stick to this more often than Doctor Who, IMO - their stories are fantastic and I have to give them credit for transitioning the whole series into the Modern World.
Peter Jackson says some interesting things about shooting at 48fps. Unlike 3D, this seems really to advance filmmaking in general. I´m very interested in watching the result.

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=76341

Peter Jackson on Shooting The Hobbit at 48 fps
Source: Peter Jackson April 12, 2011

Peter Jackson has updated his Facebook page with a post talking about why they are shooting The Hobbit films at 48 frames per second (fps) versus the usual 24 fps. You can read the post below and view a couple of new photos from the set:

Time for an update. Actually, we've been intending to kick off with a video, which is almost done, so look out for that in the next day or two. In the meantime, I thought I'd address the news that has been reported about us shooting THE HOBBIT at 48 frames per second, and explain to you what my thoughts are about this.

We are indeed shooting at the higher frame rate. The key thing to understand is that this process requires both shooting and projecting at 48 fps, rather than the usual 24 fps (films have been shot at 24 frames per second since the late 1920's). So the result looks like normal speed, but the image has hugely enhanced clarity and smoothness. Looking at 24 frames every second may seem ok--and we've all seen thousands of films like this over the last 90 years--but there is often quite a lot of blur in each frame, during fast movements, and if the camera is moving around quickly, the image can judder or "strobe."

Shooting and projecting at 48 fps does a lot to get rid of these issues. It looks much more lifelike, and it is much easier to watch, especially in 3-D. We've been watching HOBBIT tests and dailies at 48 fps now for several months, and we often sit through two hours worth of footage without getting any eye strain from the 3-D. It looks great, and we've actually become used to it now, to the point that other film experiences look a little primitive. I saw a new movie in the cinema on Sunday and I kept getting distracted by the juddery panning and blurring. We're getting spoilt!

Originally, 24 fps was chosen based on the technical requirements of the early sound era. I suspect it was the minimum speed required to get some audio fidelity out of the first optical sound tracks. They would have settled on the minimum speed because of the cost of the film stock. 35mm film is expensive, and the cost per foot (to buy the negative stock, develop it and print it), has been a fairly significant part of any film budget.

So we have lived with 24 fps for 9 decades--not because it's the best film speed (it's not by any stretch), but because it was the cheapest speed to achieve basic acceptable results back in 1927 or whenever it was adopted.

None of this thinking is new. Doug Trumbull developed and promoted a 60 frames per second process called ShowScan about 30 years ago and that looked great. Unfortunately it was never adopted past theme park use. I imagine the sheer expense of burning through expensive film stock at the higher speed (you are charged per foot of film, which is about 18 frames), and the projection difficulties in cinemas, made it tough to use for "normal" films, despite looking amazing. Actually, if anybody has been on the Star Tours ride at Disneyland, you've experienced the life like quality of 60 frames per second. Our new King Kong attraction at Universal Studios also uses 60 fps.

Now that the world's cinemas are moving towards digital projection, and many films are being shot with digital cameras, increasing the frame rate becomes much easier. Most of the new digital projectors are capable of projecting at 48 fps, with only the digital servers needing some firmware upgrades. We tested both 48 fps and 60 fps. The difference between those speeds is almost impossible to detect, but the increase in quality over 24 fps is significant.

Film purists will criticize the lack of blur and strobing artifacts, but all of our crew--many of whom are film purists--are now converts. You get used to this new look very quickly and it becomes a much more lifelike and comfortable viewing experience. It's similar to the moment when vinyl records were supplanted by digital CDs. There's no doubt in my mind that we're heading towards movies being shot and projected at higher frame rates.

Warner Bros. have been very supportive, and allowed us to start shooting THE HOBBIT at 48 fps, despite there never having been a wide release feature film filmed at this higher frame rate. We are hopeful that there will be enough theaters capable of projecting 48 fps by the time The Hobbit comes out where we can seriously explore that possibility with Warner Bros. However, while it's predicted that there may be over 10,000 screens capable of projecting THE HOBBIT at 48 fps by our release date in Dec, 2012, we don’t yet know what the reality will be. It is a situation we will all be monitoring carefully. I see it as a way of future-proofing THE HOBBIT. Take it from me--if we do release in 48 fps, those are the cinemas you should watch the movie in. It will look terrific!

Read more: Peter Jackson on Shooting The Hobbit at 48 fps - ComingSoon.net http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=76341#ixzz1JLbFIKly

The U.S based in New York a ex Secret Agent turn to Pravite Detective of the unuseral kind. The movie is not yet made but keeps on later on release. They Russel Crowe & James Bond Contender 1 time was rumered of the role but most unlikely. I can only think of Clive Owen or Transporter Jason Straham of the Role as Robert McCall.
He most carries the U.S made Walther PPK/S simlar to 007 gun. But he has alot of guns & Gadget too. You might say half Bond, Half Saint & little of Sherlock Holms. Edward Woodward played Sherlock Holms once.
I have recently discovered some great BBC shows. I have a fondness for police dramas and find them so refreshing as compared to the shytt that we get here in the USA. I am not into the mystery "whodunit" but the cop dramas make my day. My favorites would be "Prime Suspect" and "The Commander".
I notice that these shows feature players who are not hot guys or supermodel chicks (Supernatural, CSI to name a few) the characters seem more real and one can actually relate to them (if I can just understand the accents more)
Helen Mirren is middle aged and I find her a great actress as well as the lead character of "The Commander". In "Blue Murder" the main protaganist is an overweight forty-something single mom. I admire that.
Hollywood is so obscessed with pleasing teen-aged boys that they forget about the rest of us old farts... LOL

Shows like Desperate Housewives and others show this sterile and make believe view of America. We see shows where law offices and police precincts are full of hot looking women and adonis looking men...come on!
I mean overseas viewers see shows like Desperate Housewives and think that all American women are glamorous (trust me they are not, foreign visitors are amazed at the number of fat-assed overweight women in the States--LOL)

I am hooked and cannot get enough of the quality police dramas coming out of the UK.
Any suggestions?

I'm not sure if some of you are aware of this, but director Barry Sonnenfeld (MIB Trilogy) has been shooting a Tv-Film/Pilot for a new Beverly Hills Cop series. The series will star Brandon T. Jackson as Aaron Foley, and will also see the return of Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley and Judge Reinhold as Billy.

Some set photo's have been released:

http://collider.com/wp-content/uploads/beverly-hills-cop-eddie-murphy-brandon-t-jackson.jpg
http://api.ning.com/files/3jTl2qg9wX2N2IzrlXr706at8yITcldCIQ9Zsp5sFaivQ87RYqQScTNGgdlRa7uia--sEUCLfTQLAhG*IJe76Wbu1a5a5Nan/BeverlyHillsCopTVSeriesStarringEddieMurphyAndBrandonT.jpg?width=500
http://www.filmjunk.com/images/weblog/2012/10/btjackson.jpg

Now, I'm not convinced this is going to work, and I wonder if Jackson is going to be able to portray a character like the one Murphy played so brilliantly in BHC 1 & 2, but I'm casually excited and anticipating the first trailers and the eventual product.

So, I was wondering what you think of this new film and possible series and if any of you might have more information than what I've posted just now. Also, feel free to turn this into a general Beverly Hills Cop discussion after a while, but for now I'd really like your opinions on this new project.
