Bond Performance

In this thread, gentle readers, I want you to give me your most definitive Bond performance. (I could’ve of sworn this had been done before, maybe the old forums had it. Anyway...)

I had trouble choosing one of the plethora of Bond performance’s, some notable considerations that fell by the wayside included; Casino Royale, Craig’s visceral debut – it had too many “out of character” moments for me; The World Is Not Enough – too melodramatic. Which is a shame, I thought Brosnan was rather good, to be honest. Plus he looks fantastic; On Her Majesty’s Secret Service – considering he was a rookie actor, I thought he done bloody well. It’s like putting a novice musician in The Beatles, replacing McCartney. This is what the producers were trying do to in replacing Sean Connery.

Some honourable mentions have to go to; Thunderball for Connery’s virile, and so uber cool portrayal; both of Dalton’s efforts; one, The Living Daylights is a more classic outing, although he has layers of depth, subtleties, to his characterization, and the other, Licence To Kill, for a more animalistic interpretation, where Bond loses his sheen of sophistication, exposing the blunt instrument beneath. For most of the movie Bond fights with his heart, the personal nature of the story clouding his judgement, making his aim sloppy. It is only once Bond learns about the stinger missiles is he finally able to treat his vendetta as a mission, and he finally gains control of the situation.

But I have to go for From Russia With Love. For me Connery may well have delivered the greatest Bondian performance; suave, professional, poised, authoritative, decisive, charming, virile and ruthless.

Up to you peeps... :-)

Note Mod’s this isn’t a Bond ranking, more a Bond performance thingy. ;-)

Well i really don't know lol, i'll have to think on it ;)

(Sorry if this thread already exists, i've searched for any like this and didn't find it.)

Welsh actor Matthew Rhys was considered for the role of James Bond. In a radio interview he says "the Broccolis saw everyone far and wide" which I'm guessing would mean Hugh Jackman and Clive Owen - two actors that denied they were approached to play Bond after Pierce Brosnan was told he wasn't coming back for his fifth film.

I think this is the best evidence Owen and Jackman were considered but not chosen due to pay demands. I guess we'll never know the 'truth' but it is interesting to hear an actor claim the producers saw everyone - and I think it's reasonable to assume 'everyone' would mean all high profile actors up for the part and that would have to include Owen and Jackman. I don't believe Clive Owen was telling the truth when he said the producers never approached him for the role of James Bond. Sorry, Clive, I may be wrong but I don't believe you!

You can hear the segment starting at 1 min 30 seconds here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-22796215

I think his comments are quite revealing. :)

We have one for Connery, Moore and Brosnan, so why not one for imo, the very best Bond.

I love Dalton, and his films. TLD was one of the first films I ever saw, definetly the first Bond film and since then he's always been my favourite. I like all of them, but not even Brosnan (my 2nd fave), could match up to the greatness that is Dalton, and I don't think (in my eyes) anyone ever will. I like how he was dark and serious, but also classic Bond. LTK is still my favourite film of all time.

Outside of Bond, I haven't seen that much of him, but he was amazing in Hot Fuzz, one of the funniest films I've ever seen.

We know Bond has eclectic tastes in women, but I was wondering if over time he has demonstrated a preference for any particular nationality? I'm figuring that simply by virtue of their being close at hand, Bond must have struck up a healthy tally of Brits. For instance in Goldfinger all the girls are British and then in OHMSS he even marries one - or should Tracy be counted as Italian. Speaking of which, should Daniela Bianchi count as Russian or Italian? Very confusing.

Javier Bardem has found a couple of killer roles. He will star as the good guy (for a change) in J.C. Chandor’s next film A Most Violent Year, which will shoot in Manhattan this fall. Chandor, who made a splash in Cannes unveiling the Robert Redford-starrer survival tale All Is Lost, wrote A Most Violent Year, which Before The Door’s Neal Dodson and Anna Gerb will produce, with FilmNation handling global sales. Bardem is also locking in to go mano a mano with Sean Penn in The Gunman, another project that made waves at Cannes by selling out its foreign territorial allotment. The film is being directed by Pierre Morel and financed by Studio Canal, with Joel Silver and Andrew Rona producing. Bardem excels in these kinds of movies, winning the Oscar for No Country For Old Men, and most recently playing the existentially tortured villain who squared off against 007 in Skyfall. He’s repped by WME and will next be seen in the stellar cast of the Ridley Scott-directed The Counselor, opposite Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz.

http://www.deadline.com/2013/06/javier-bardem-pacts-pair-hell-star-in-j-c-chandors-a-most-violent-year-and-opposite-sean-penn-in-the-gunman

Former James Bond Pierce Brosnan will return to the spy genre with November Man, a newly-announced thriller that is going to pair the fan-fave Irishman with rising star Dominic Cooper (The Devil’s Double, Captain America).

November Man is the first film to be released under a deal between Brosnan’s Irish DreamTime and The Solution Entertainment Group. DreamTime co-head and Brosnan’s frequent collaborator, Beau St. Clair, will produce the project, along with Das Films’ Sriram Das (who helped develop the script) and Dino Conte as executive producer.

Michael Finch (co-writer of Predators) and Karl Gajdusek (Trespass) worked together on the script for November Man, which is based primarily on the book “There Are No Spies” by the late Bill Granger. The film adaptation is going to be directed by Roger Donaldson, and is described as follows (in the official press release):

NOVEMBER MAN tells the tale of an ex-CIA operative who is brought back in on a very personal mission and finds himself pitted against his former pupil in a deadly game involving high level CIA officials and the Russian president-elect.

For those who aren’t familiar: Donaldson’s more noteworthy directing efforts over the past thirty years include The Bounty, No Way Out, Cocktail, Species, Dante’s Peak (with Brosnan), Thirteen Days, The Recruit, The World’s Fastest Indian, The Bank Job – and, most recently, the Nicolas Cage thriller Seeking Justice.

Granger’s work on the November Man series has often been compared to that of John le Carré’s spy literature – and, sure enough, there are a handful of obvious similarities between the November Man movie and last year’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (which was based on le Carré’s novel). The former isn’t the high-pedigree production that the latter is, but November Man could turn out as a reasonably entertaining espionage flick in Donaldson’s (usually) capable hands. DreamTime and Solution clearly hope that’ll prove to be the case, as they want November Man to kick-off a new franchise.

Production on November Man is scheduled to get underway this October, not too long after Cooper wraps up his work on the thriller Dead Man Down. We will keep you up-to-date on any additional noteworthy developments in the meantime.

http://screenrant.com/pierce-brosnan-dominic-cooper-november-man-sandy-171823/

This should keep the Brozzie fans happy!!

Benicio Del Toro has joined the killer cast of the James Gunn-directed Marvel Studios franchise launcher Guardians Of The Galaxy. They are keeping his role under wraps, but he’s playing a character that is built to be part of future Marvel films, which means he has signed a deal with options that put him into multiple movies. It’s funny how when Marvel Studios first started making option-heavy deals, actors and their agents grumbled loudly. But guys like Samuel L. Jackson and Mark Ruffalo have done great stuff in short doses in incredibly high-profile films. Now, it will be intriguing to see what the company does with a property that doesn’t have the road-tested brand awareness of a Captain America, Thor, or Iron Man. I have to say that given the high bar for quality that Marvel has set under Kevin Feige — Iron Man 3 being the latest crowd-pleasing example — I’m more excited about this than the other space-based project Disney is banking on, Star Wars. Del Toro joins Glenn Close, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, John C. Reilly and others in the cast.

Del Toro most recently joined the cast of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice. He’ll next be seen in Jimmy P, the film that made its world premiere in competition at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. He’s also got the untitled film directed by Terrence Malick. Del Toro is represented by CAA and Rick Yorn.

http://www.deadline.com/2013/06/benicio-del-toro-takes-lead-role-in-marvels-guardians-of-the-galaxy/#more-512272

I was looking at some Bond related Youtube videos and found Barry Norman's Film 95 review of Goldeneye. At one point in the item cinema-going punters are asked what they thought of the film and guess who appears - actor Idris Elba? One of the actors rumoured to be a potential James Bond when Craig retires. He appears at the 42 seconds mark - the guy on the left:

I think you'll need to click the Youtube link to see the video.

I'm fairly sure it's him. His voice is identical to Elba's and he looks like him albeit what he would have looked like back in the 1990s. He would have been 25 years old in 1995.

Anyone think it's him?

Recent media reports have claimed Elba has been in contact with Eon and might become the first black James Bond.

Or is it just a UK thing? Reading that he will do another tour in the UK, prompted me to speculate about that. I know that when he did his book tours regarding his autobiography and last year's "Bond On Bond" book, he was well received by both, the general U.S. public and the media. I know that if one was done nearby, I'd love to attend such an event.

When Daniel Craig was shooting his second Bond film, he recuperated in some unusual surroundings.

James Bond, with his long line of female conquests, is not the first person you would associate with nuns.

So you might be surprised to learn that Daniel Craig, the current Bond, stayed at a convent when making his second 007 film, Quantum Of Solace, in 2008.

Craig rented a three-bedroom apartment in the converted St John the Baptist convent in Windsor while filming took place at Pinewood Studios, a 20-minute drive away.

Craig’s flat was originally the show home in the complex, partly because it is the largest of the flats but also because of its huge central ornamental fireplace.

The Grade II listed complex, parts of which date back to 1853, was home to the Community of St John Baptist, also known as the Sisters of Mercy, an Anglican religious order of Augustinian nuns. In 2001, the order moved to Oxfordshire, and the buildings were converted into 70 apartments.

The flat where Craig stayed was a peaceful haven for him to return to in the evenings after an arduous day’s filming.

The apartment, which is currently owned by Tom Morgan, 29, a telecoms product sales manager, and his girlfriend Stacie Nickless, 23, a hairstylist, has views over the peaceful internal courtyard of the former convent, and its impressive chapel.

The chapel has yet to be converted – plans have been lodged to turn it into a spa and swimming pool for the current residents, but permission has not been granted.

Tom and Stacie are seeking a home with more outdoor space and are now selling the property for £660,000.

With its cast-iron spiral staircase leading up to a mezzanine level, Tom and Stacie’s flat has all the right credentials for a bachelor pad. Each bedroom has its own en suite bathroom, even the one on the mezzanine level, which Tom says is often used as ‘Stacie’s dressing room’.

Tom has lived in the property for three years and he and Stacie have changed much of the original decor. When he bought it, two cast-iron chandeliers hung in the high-ceilinged drawing room, giving the room the air of a medieval banqueting hall.

Tom had these replaced with crystal-like ones, which were painstakingly hung, piece by piece, giving the room a brighter, more modern feel.

He made other attempts to make the room appear lighter, such as painting the dark wood decking in the drawing room a pale green. He based this colour on a Farrow & Ball shade that he had mixed by a local paint company to save money.

Although Tom and Stacie have put a lot of effort into styling the apartment, they say it could be presented in any way.

‘You could make it look really modern, with all white furniture,’ Stacie says. ‘We joke that it could easily be redecorated by its next owners in sleek, James Bond style.’

The outdoor space in the complex, which is appropriately called Convent Court, is all communal and maintained by a property management firm. There is no concierge but there is a gated entrance. It certainly feels very safe.

‘I never feel afraid if Tom is away on business,’ Stacie says. Tom and Stacie, who are ‘very sociable’, say the courtyard at Convent Court is ideal for parties.

‘Summer is lovely here,’ Tom says. ‘You can sit out in the courtyard all day – we use it for barbecues. The main room here is great for entertaining too. If we didn’t need more outdoor space for our dog, we would probably stay.’

Convent Court is perfectly situated – far enough from the centre of Windsor to avoid the hustle and bustle but convenient for access. It is also close to the M4 motorway for Heathrow Airport, London and Bristol.

Brian Warren, Regional Director at Fine & Country, Windsor, says: ‘James Bond would be at home in this stunning and unusual apartment. The decadent chandeliers, Gothic features and high-rise ceilings embody celebrity style – from Windsor with love.’

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2326717/007-Convent-Solace-When-Daniel-Craig-shooting-second-Bond-film-recuperated-unusual-surroundings.html?ito=feeds-newsxml
